:: reading challenge update #1 ::

January 25, 2011

Between sniffles and sneezes, upset stomachs and upset children we’ve gotten off to a slow start for our reading challenge.  But, as we all know, slow and steady often wins the race!  We’ve pledged to read 200 picture books throughout 2011, which should be a fun adventure now that Ava can share in some of the storytelling.

So far, our book choices have been whatever the kids want to read from our current collection.  I’m hoping to broaden the horizons somewhat this year because although our collection is impressive, we’ve read them all already!  I found a great reference list of “100 Picture Books Everyone Should Know” that contains some familiar titles as well as new-to-me stories.  Going to the library is a weekly event at our house and the kids love when there are new books there waiting for them.  This gives us a chance to practice requesting books from the librarian also.

Finally, given the current infatuation with fish, monsters and dragons, I can assure you that all will be represented substantially in our reading list.  You can thank Ava for that.  Isaac is just happy reading “Bugs and Slugs”.  Repeatedly.

I find television to be very educating.  Every time somebody turns on the set, I go in the other room and read a book.  ~Groucho Marx
